When you hear that name it suddenly takes you back to those glory days when there was a team not only in England but in the whole football world that was unplayable. The opponents would have that fear playing this team. There was a time Manchester United was considered as the best team in the world. They had won it all under the famous SIR ALEX FERGUSON considered as one of the greatest football manager of all time. They had a great history before this Manchester United downfall.
Sir Alex Ferguson Era
Alex Ferguson and Manchester United was a match made in heaven. Sir Alex Ferguson had built a team which was a perfect fit for the English premiere league. Not only in England but Manchester United was dominating all over Europe. This was a team built on youth academy players known as class of 92’. The team which was built on passion for club, when players used to play for the pride of their club. The team which was strong in every aspect of game and dominated the world of football for decades alongside Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Barcelona. Won the Treble in season 1998-99.
Afterwards Manchester United recruited players like Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo which even made them even more fearless and deadliest on attack than ever before. In May 2008 they won their Second Champions League Trophy under Sir Alex.
Under the reign of Alex Ferguson Manchester United won 38 trophies including 13 Premier league titles, 2 UEFA Champions League and 5 FA cups. He retired in 2013 with winning Premier League in his final season as well. But since then they haven’t won a Premier League. What Went Wrong? Who is responsible for the Manchester United downfall?
David Moyes Era
When talking about the Manchester United downfall, it started as soon as Sir Alex left the club with his departure, A lot of players also lost interest in the team. David Moyes took charge on July 1st, 2013. Manchester United played 51 games under him won 27, drew 9 and lost 15 of them.
Manchester United went Trophy less that season and due to even worst performance in Champions League, David Moyes was sacked on April 22nd, 2014. Ryan Giggs was appointed as the caretaker manager till the end of the season. There are a lot of theories made by fans and media that Ryan Giggs was the right man to do the job after Sir Alex but it didn’t happened.
LOUIS VAN GAAL ERA
Louis Van Gaal was appointed as the Manchester United manager on July 16, 2014. Under Louis Van Gaal they started to become better and better as the days passed. United played 103 games under him. Won 54, Drew 25 and Lost 24. Manchester United won just one trophy under Van Gaal, THE FA CUP. One positive thing happened in his management was that he gave chance to a lot youth players as well. But his big flops was his signings like Angel Di Maria, Falcao and Memphis Depay which created even more frustration in the squad. The team chemistry was going nowhere and after consecutive poor performances he was sacked on May 23, 2016.
Jose Mourinho Era
The Special one took charge of Manchester United on May 27, 2016. Under Mourinho they had a pretty good time too and won some Trophies under him. Manchester United played 144 games under him. Won 84, Drew 32 and Lost 28. United won 3 Trophies under the management of the special one Uefa Europa League, League Cup and The Community Shield. Jose Mourinho finished 2nd with Manchester United in his first season which was quite remarkable considering the squad provided to him. But the Premier League was still missing.
As Jose Mourinho said in press conference:
“Finishing second with this Manchester United squad is my careers biggest achievement”
- Media Critics
As from the start the game play of Jose Mourinho was criticized in all over the media. Because of his more defensive tactics than be a more offensive. He applied the same play style from the start and even got successful too. But the critics created more and more pressure on him, the management, fans and the Board of Directors as well.
But some of the critics were right on him too for playing boring old school football instead of not playing the modern day football which is getting more offensive day by day. As the energy and intensity of the games in Premier League is increasing every season with a lot of quality attacking players coming to premier league as well.
Later on after constant unsatisfactory results Manchester United ended up on 6th position in season 2017-18 and after that Jose was sacked on December 18, 2018. And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed as the caretaker manager.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Era
Due to his club record as a player everybody in Manchester United just love him and adore him. As he served under Sir Alex Ferguson and won several trophies and was not just a part of treble winning team but also scored a treble winning goal for Manchester United. He scored 91 goals in 235 appearances for United.
After taking over Manchester united in mid of season from where Mourinho left it was a big challenge for Ole to end up a season well enough for the fans. After his heroics against PSG in the Champions League and his attacking mentality which had been in the core and was missing since Sir Alex left the club, he was confirmed as the permanent manager.
But since then the performances have not been up-to the mark. Due to the fact that they have not made it to the Champions League this year so no big names came in transfer window as fans hoped except Harry Maguire. So Manchester United just faced another bad transfer season.
Manchester United haven’t started this season well either despite winning their first game against Chelsea by 4-0.
Till now Manchester United downfall continues as they have played 10 games, won 4, drawn 3, lost 3. Not just the results but the fans are no more enjoying the football the team is playing. Although they have invested big this summer bringing in the most expensive defender (Harry Maguire) but they are still struggling against the teams like West Ham and Crystal Palace.
Manchester United has spent a total of £ 611.1 M in the last 5 years but still haven’t won the league once.
Many football fans are considering Manchester United as an Average Team. A team that was once great. A team following into the footsteps of teams like AC MILAN and AJAX.
The Role of Board
The Manchester United Board of Directors includes the likes of Avram Glazer, Joel Glazer, Edward Woodward, Richard Arnold and others. To be very honest the board plays an important role in the success of a club. The board made a lot of mistakes already since Alex Ferguson left the club which are the main reason behind Manchester United downfall.
The first mistake was to appoint David Moyes to manage a club as big as Manchester United. They should have done better choosing managers.
Another big mistake was to sack Jose Mourinho. Giving priority to players than managers is not acceptable in any manner. A lot of fans might not agree on this point but it is the bitter truth. Jose Mourinho was doing a pretty much good job. He got them a European trophy and a league cup but he wasn’t given a full third season with the club instead they replaced him with another manager.
After all those years after Sir Alex it seems like the management was not the only problem. The interference of Board of directors in management has been a biggest issue since the start. Letting good players go and giving wrong players contract extensions.
The board has to be sensible with their decisions, the team and transfer rights should be given to manager. And the club is becoming more like a marketing and an advertisement hub and players are losing passion for the club instead coming for the money and sponsors.
As with Phelan departure, looks like Ole is left alone to take decisions as Carrick has zero experience in managing the team.
Even the GOAT faced the same critics and problems, so sacking managers won’t solve a mystery. Now, they have to give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer some time may be a season or two to build his team and give him free hand in taking care of players, transfers and other club management issues. And we hope that the Mighty Red Devils come back to claim their position in the League.
Can Manchester United make a comeback? Will they ever be able to rule the premier league again? Is this just another bad spell? Or Manchester United is gradually vanishing from the community of top football clubs? Are they the next AC Milan? What are your thoughts on this?
